Catching up with some of Mr Wasabi’s friends at the Nice Hotel’s restaurant Table. Table is not like your normal chain hotel restaurants where the decor is fairly minimal. This was more like a good boutique restaurant with arty decor sporting a good indoor and outdoor covered dining area.
We arrived fairly late in the evening where it was dark enough for the patio lights to be on, of which one of the lightings was a flame in which Sweet Pea took a keen interest to.
I orderd a main, but by instruction from Mr Wasabi forced me to order a starter, while he ordered two starters
West Coast Whitebait Two Ways Whitebait fritter and crispy whitebait served w salmon caviar and lemon, crispy croute, cucumber and chive beurre blanc – was delicious and light. For a starter, this was quite a fairly substantial dish
Confit Duck Risotto Morello cherries, cashew nut crumbs, Manuka cured “duck bacon” This dish was apparently the talk of the table this evening. Praising how delicious it was. I took a mouthful from Mr Wasabi’s dish and thought it was ok, though being a confit duck risotto I thought it was fairly heavy, though to judge it fairly I would have need a few more mouthfuls in which Mr Wasabi was not offering. *Mr Wasabi Recommended Dish*
Calamari Ripieni Stuffed with salmon and shrimp served w squid ink mayonnaise, fennel and lemon – found it to be very salty for my liking and did not enjoy it as much as my whitebait dish.
Silver Fern Farms Red Deer Short Loin w Spiced plum jam Served with: twice cooked duck fat potatoes, red wine poached baby onions and roasted forest mushroom jus. The venison was nicely cooked where it was still pink in the centre. Generally i would expect one piece of venison but this dish came with two fairly large bits. It must be a provincial thing to have larger than normal portion sizes. But I was not complaining as it was more than enough to share with Mr Wasabi.
Tiramisu – was beautifully presented, it was not your usual tradition tiramisu that you get from an Italian restaurant. Good but not great.
One thing that stood out was the level of service I had brought Sweet Pea with me who had just woken up when our mains were served. One of the wait staff there offered to take her for me so that I could eat my main. I did not have an issue with the wait staff taking Sweet Pea and allowed her as it had been a while since I was able to enjoy a good meal out.
If you are after a nice place to spend on that special occasion or even if you are just after some good decent food, then I would definitely recommend this place. The service here is excellent, the food is delicious and the prices are reasonable.
