Federal Delicatessen is my go to place if I want to get a decent poutine in New Zealand. There definitely is no place in Wellington that you can get this dish (well not that I know of. But if you know of a place, please let me know). Federal Delicatessen is brought to you by Al Brown who also brought you the delicious Best Ugly Bagel.
It is interesting how this diner does very well, which seems to be a recent trend where a number of people have opened up ‘American’ style diners across the country that serves a selection of burgers and smoked meats. Please check out my previous review here.
I went in with the intentions of ordering the Poutine only, but knowing Mr Wasabi who has eyes larger than his stomach proceeded to order the entire menu (well more than what we could eat)
Poutine – there are only two words that describes this dish *simply delicious* – crispy potato chips, cheese curds covered in a salty, yet slightly thick gravy that was hot enough to melt some of the curds creating a nice stretchy texture like you get with mozarrela. We ordered the large size as I had been craving for some decent poutine ever since we left Montreal earlier in the year.
Matzo Ball Soup w shredded chicken & bagel dumplings – the soup was cooked right in front of where were were sitting. What I found disgusting was the staff member taste testing the soup with the same spoon without sterilising it after he added additional seasoning.
Apart from the hygiene, the soup was nicely seasoned with the addition of someone else saliva. I did not really enjoy the bagel duping as these were more or less like raw bagel dough balls that were cooked with the soup. I found these bagel dumplings to be a bit stodgy Though the remainder of the soup was very tasty especially with he inclusion of the chicken was was from the rotisserie.
House Pastrami – smoked brisket w/ pickles & mustard we ordered a small dish of pastrami. It was fairly tender. You definitely get a good fair amount of slices for what you pay. the pastrami was not as salty as some other outlets but I still prefer Schwartz in Montreal as their’s is more succulent, tasty and tender.
Milk-Fed Veal Schnitzel w sage & lemon is Mr Wasabi’s favourite. With the inclusion of the lemon made this dish even more appealing and tasty. the coating was golden and crispy. This is best eaten with mash potato and gravy which would provide a nice complete meal.
If you are after some decent poutine or crispy veal schnitzel then I would reckoned this place to you. It is very popular with he young and old and expect to wait for a table if dining during dinner. There is a selection of seating from booths, tables, bar or counter.
