Our Taupo road trip ended with a final stop at Brown Sugar cafe in Taihape. Mr Wasabi was after a decent cup of coffee as well as filling up on petrol. Since we were not very happy with Telephonic Cafe on our way up, we decided to try another place.
Brown Sugar cafe has a cosy atmosphere that backs onto a ski store, which had a rustic country feel to it with all the wooden tables and chairs.
I was still full from brunch, though Mr Wasabi wanted a few things to eat and ordered a couple of counterfood items.
Sausage Roll – house made sausage roll. one thing which I did not appreciate was that these were warmed in the microwave, which meant the pastry did not have that crispy texture that you would come to expect with pastry when cooked/heated in the oven. Even being heated in the microwave, the sausage roll was not as hot as I would have liked it, but Mr Wasabi was satisfied with it.
Fruit Danish – This reminded me more of a chelsea bun than a danish made from flaky pastry dough. The danish was a soft bread with a good amount of raisin with a drizzling of lemon icing on top.
Flat White – coffee beans by supreme coffee, a local Wellington coffee roaster. which is also one of our favourite coffee roasters. Coffee was good, not too hot nor too bitter/burnt. It was slightly bit too frothy on the top
Even though the staff are friendly the food service was very slow. the flat white took forever to arrive even though they were not very busy. I suspect it was a trainer behind the espresso machine. The coffee managed to arrive just before Mr Wasabi had finished his food.
Definitely a much cheaper cafe than that of Telephonic Cafe across the road. Am more than happy to return the next time we are passing through.
