Bun Hut

www.misopeckish.comThere is one thing to be said about Auckland and its population, and that is the number of restaurants that exist with a wide range of cuisines to choose from. With a large Asian population, Chinese dishes tend to be more varied and cheaper than what can be found in Wellington.   One of these is the humble dumplings.  Where on average you can pay $10 and expect to get 20 dumplings, while in Wellington you would be paying $10 to get 10 dumplings.

As the weekend got closer, I was craving more and more for these simple dumplings.   I wanting to try somewhere different to the usual dumpling shops that I normally frequent, so we decided to head to Bun Hut on Dominion Road.

The decor is simplistic and as you would expect when dining along Dominion Road but most of all clean.  By my surprise, the waitress had fairly good English.  At the back you can see two ladies making dumplings one after the other in preparation for the dinner time rush.

Studying the menu, I soon realised some of the items they had, reminded me of the Taiwanese breakfast I had in Taipei when I was last there.  I wanted to try it, but did not have enough room in my stomach to eat it.   I ended up ordering a couple of plate to share with Mr Wasabi.

Pork and Chive Dumplings – 20 dumplings for $9 is a true bargain especially for Wellington. I ordered the boiled dumplings over fried dumplings.

The skins were not to thick as other dumplings I have had.  The filling was well seasoned with a good proportion of mince pork to chives and very juicy.

Fried Pancakes  w Egg and Shrimp – for the untrained eye, you would mode probably would not notice this is made from pancakes as they are thinly sliced and then fried.   One down side to this dish is the lack of shrimps.  Of the shrimps that I saw, they seemed like the ‘broken’ pieces that you can get at the supermarket. This dish is definitely a good belly filler.

Chives is one of those things similar to garlic where if you eat to much, your breath will start to smell of it.

Bun Hut was not very busy, mind you we did arrive at 4.30pm.   Offers a good selection of food from steam buns to dumplings and larger mains.

Will be back to try other items on the menu.

You should try the one in the city, as I find their foods are far more tastier and premises are cleaner. Plus they are much more friendlier and offer you a free plate of veggies with any meal, If they do not give them to you, just ask as they sometimes forget

There are parking buildings all around the city. You shouldn’t have a problem with finding any to get parking. There is one just across the road
