Le Salon de Joel Rubuchon @ Central

www.misopeckish.comHaving previously dined at Le Atetalier by Joel Rubuchon and being very impressed with the meal we decided to give Le Salon a go.

Le Salon is a French tea salon that offers a great selection of sandwiches, bakery products, pastries and cakes, and coffee/tea for dining-in and takeaway. It is one of the best tea salons in town that famously served afternoon tea, croissants as well as macaroons.

They are open quite early in the mornings catching the peak morning traffic of those heading to work and opens till late in the evenings.

The service here is sub standard compared to his restaurants.  We had to ask for everything such as cutlery, napkins etc.. a far cry to the service you get from Le Atetalier.  But I guess the service you get depends how pricey the place is.

We decided to have afternoon tea for two, which offers a selection of finger sandwiches, scones, sweet slices and chocolates.

The sandwiches and scones arrived together first, and there was one earl grey orange scone and one raisin scone for each of us.

The Ear Grey Orange scones and Raisin Scone were not warm as I was expecting.  While the texture was crumbly, it was also a tad on the dry side.  I was not able to taste the flavor of the earl grey orange scone – it tasted like a plain scone to me.   Some clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam were provided as spreads for the scones, which helped to enhance the taste and give it more moisture.  The clotted cream was soft and rich while the strawberry jam had clumps of fruits in it.  The scones here were good but not the best that I have had.

Maine Lobster and Mango Sandwich – the taste of the mango was strong and sweet, which did not overpower the taste of the lobster.  The sandwich was soft and easy to eat with its jello-like mango, lobster paste layered inbetween two slices of bread.

French Style Black Truffle Sandwich – This was easily my favorite sandwich of the set! The sandwich was aromatic while the truffle pate was rich and flavourful.  One of those dishes where you want to have one again and again espeically if you are a fan of truffle like myself.  www.misopeckish.com

Smoked Salmon and Salmon Egg Sandwich – the smoked salmon was salty while the salmon eggs provided a bursting texture.  The drizzling of the chopped chives enhanced the flavour of the smoked salmon.

Vegetarian Eggplant Sandwich – this sandwich was rather plain compared to the other sandwiches in the set.  The herb on top was fragrant but the taste was not memorable at all.  Would have been nice to have more egg plant pate.

Goat Cheese with Salmon Sandwich – this sandwich was rich as the goat cheese was creamy and salty which contrasted nicely with the salmon. The bread was also different than the other sandwiches as it was harder and crunchier which provided a different texture to cheese and salmon.

Mont-Blanc – a mont blanc that was not so mont blanc with too little chestnut puree. The chocolate and meringue easily overpowered the flavor of the chestnut.  The biscuit bottom was thin and light which meant it was easy to break through without making a huge mess.

Paris-Brest – the choux pastry was light and delicate with fillings of hazelnut praline which was soft, creamy and full of flavour, which was not too sweet.  The chopped nuts provided a nice texture.

White Chocolate Raspberry Cake – at first I thought the raspberries were sitting on a dense hard cheese cake, however to my surprise the texture was soft which turned out to be a white chocolate mousse.    The mousse was creamy and mildly sweet which went very well with the sweet and tartiness of the raspberries.

Homemade Macaron Ganache – Love macaron therefore it is no doubt I love this pastry.  The macarons provided a crunchy texture for the rich smooth chocolate granache and soft biscuit base was an enjoyment.

Mango Jelly Cheese Cake – the mango was sweet and tangy,  but thicker than I had anticipated.   The cheesecake was soft and creamy.  The base provided a nice crumbly texture as well. www.misopeckish.com

Chocolate Truffles –  great finish to a beautiful afternoon tea.

Tea Cake – found it to be a bit dry for my liking.  It perhaps need some cream or yoghurt.  By the time I got to this I was already full, so only took a bite as a taster.

This is definitely good value for money compare to other afternoon teas that is available.  the sandwiches and sweet pastries are delightful.
